Sri Lanka – Primal strength from the wild

Human-elephant conflict (HEC) is one of the biggest environmental and socio-economic crises of rural Sri Lanka. Habitat loss is forcing Sri Lanka’s endangered elephants into increased clashes with human inhabitants. HEC is responsible for the deaths of around 160 elephants and 50 humans annually. Orphan calves are kept in the Elephant Transit Home, a facility within Udawalawe National Park. Its primary objective is to rehabilitate orphaned elephant calves for release back into the wild.
